Presentation of Report on War Crimes Trials in Serbia in 2013, and ensuing Debate

post_izvestajOn Tuesday, July 8th 2014, the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) presented the Report on War Crimes Trials in 2013 and held a debate on the main findings of the report. The report is based on the monitoring of war crimes proceedings carried out before the War Crimes Department of the Higher Court in Belgrade, the War Crimes Department of the Court of Appeal in Belgrade and the courts of general jurisdiction in Požarevac, Niš and Prokuplje.

Press Conference – “ Transitional Justice in Serbia’s EU Accession Process”

The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) and the Coalition for Access to Justice today presented an analysis of the compliance of national legislation with the EU acquis in the area of war crimes and fundamental rights within Chapter 23 – Judiciary and fundamental rights. This analysis, „Transitional Justice in Serbia’s EU Accession Process”, shows the EU policies and instruments regarding the crimes committed in the past, the EU regulations containing principles of transitional justice, the current compliance of the Republic of Serbia’s legislation with these regulations, and recommendations for further harmonization. The analysis is available for download in Serbian and English

Round table discussion on role of education in the processes of determining responsibility with a view to reconciliation

 

zbornik2On Friday, 28th March 2014, a round table discussion Education for Reconciliation:theRole of Education in the Processes of Determining Responsibility and of Reconciliation, and the presentation of a collection of papers written by Regional Transitional Justice School students, took place in the Library of the Union University Law School in Belgrade. The round table, organized jointly by the Humanitarian Law Center, the Union University Law School and the Center for Advanced Legal Studies, was opened by Professor  Zlatko Stefanović, Dean of the  Union University Law School, and Marijana Toma, Coordinator of the Programme for Education at the Humanitarian Law Center. Participants included professors at the Union University Law School and Belgrade University, associates from various scientific institutes, alumni of the Regional Transitional Justice School, and Belgrade University and Union University students.

A round table discussion and a presentation of collection of papers written by Regional Transitional Justice School students was held in Pristina

zbornik2A round table discussion Education for Reconciliation: the Role of Education in the Process of Determining Responsibility and the Reconciliation Process was held in the National Library of Kosovo on Monday, 24th March, 2014. At the round table, organized by the HumanitarianLawCenter and the Humanitarian Law Center Kosovo, a collection of papers written by RegionalTransitionalJusticeSchool students was presented.  The round table was opened by Adriatik Kelmendi, journalist and professor at the AABUniversity in Pristina, and Bekim Blakaj, executive director of the Humanitarian Law Center Kosovo.

“Children After War” Discussion

The “Children After War” discussion, organized by the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC), was held in the Cultural Centre of Belgrade on Thursday, December 19th, 2013. Present were seven young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo and Serbia, who survived crimes and personal tragedies alone or together with their family members. The roundtable was attended by 40 young students of elementary and high schools and university students from Serbia.

Presentation of Dossier: “125th Motorized Brigade of the Yugoslav Army”

The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) presented the Dossier: “125th Motorized Brigade of the Yugoslav Army” on Friday, October 11th, 2013. This Dossier describes 10 crimes in which members of the 125th Motorized Brigade of the YA, under the command of Dragan Živanović, or subordinate units of the 125th Mtr.Br., participated, and in which 301 civilians were killed, including seven women and 19 children.

Presentation of the Dossier on “125th Motorized Brigade of the Yugoslav Army”

The Humanitarian Law Center will present its Dossier on “The 125th Motorized Brigade of the Yugoslav Army” (Dossier) on Friday, October 11th, 2013 at 13:30. The Dossier presents the operation of this Yugoslav Army unit during the war in Kosovo and the crimes committed in  this unit’s zone of responsibility, where 1,813 Kosovo Albanian civilians were killed, 216 of whom are still registered as missing. None of the perpetrators of these war crimes have been prosecuted to date.

Report on Material Reparation for 2012 Presented

On Wednesday, June 13th, 2013, the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) presented its report on material reparation for the year 2012, titled “Fulfilling the Right for Victims of Human Rights to Seek Reparation Before Serbian Courts – Serving Justice or Trivializing Crimes”. Tanja Drobnjak, an HLC attorney, who represents victims in lawsuits against the state of Serbia, Petar Žmak, Reparation Project Coordinator at the HLC, Dr. Saša Gajin from the Faculty of Law at Union University, and Senad Jusufbegović, a former prisoner at the Šljivovica and Mitovo Polje camps, spoke at the conference. Sandra Orlović, the Executive Director of the HLC, was the Moderator.

‘Judicial justice does not acknowledge the victims’

Belgrade – Nataša Kandić argues that the judgments rendered in the Gotovina, Markač and Perišić cases have demonstrated the limitations of a criminal justice which does not take due account of the victims of the wars.

Discussion held on “Past crimes – possibilities of using Transitional Justice mechanisms in addressing the Kurdish issue in Turkey”

On the occasion of the visit by the Istanbul-based Hafiza Merkezi Centre to the Humanitarian Law Centre (HLC), a discussion on the subject “Past crimes – possibilities of using transitional justice mechanisms in addressing the Kurdish issue“, was held on 28 March 2013 in the HLC library. In their opening remarks, the members of the Hafiza Merkezi Centre  (Centre for Truth, Justice and Memory), an organisation aiming to uncover the truth about human rights violations in Turkey, preserve the nation’s collective memory and support the survivors and their families in the pursuit of justice, introduced themselves and their organisation to the discussion participants.
