BELGRADE, September 28th, 2011 – A few days ago, the Humanitarian Law Center published a remarkable book. It can be said to represent a milestone in relations between the peoples of former Yugoslavia, in the past 20 years of the postwar period.
The Kosovo Memory Book is a symbolic memorial for all of the victims of the conflict in Kosovo in the period 1998-2000 and it represents an intention to preserve memory of them. As a result of years of research, information gathering, and data analysis, the Kosovo Memory book gives a name to every victim and establishes facts about the circumstances under which these individuals lost their lives or disappeared during the conflict. The Book is dedicated to victims from all ethnic communities in Kosovo and besides civilians, it also mentions soldiers from both sides who were killed in the conflict. This volume is only the first in a series and it speaks of the victims from 1998. Later books will cover the years of 1999 and 2000.
Department for War Crimes of the High Court in Belgrade sentenced on September 23, 2011 the accused Veljko Maric to 12 years in prison for war crimes committed in 1991 against civilians in the village Rastovac (Croatia). The Humanitarian law Center believes that Veljko Maric, a Croatian citizen, should be tried in Croatia, that the Republic of Serbia should have extradited him to Croatia, and that it should have submitted evidence against him to the State Attorney’s Office of the Republic of Croatia, in accordance with the 2006 Agreement on cooperation in the prosecution of war crimes offenders. HLC reminds that the War Crimes Prosecutor of the Republic of Serbia has filed at least 10 indictments against war criminals, citizens of Serbia, based on evidence handed over to it by the State Attorney’s Office of the Republic fo Croatia.
